Making the Vet's Office a Fun Place for Fido

Going to the vet's office can be a stressful ordeal, both for your dog and for you.  The smells, the sounds, the poking and prodding can be a little much for your pup and their stress can be a little much for you!  But there are some simple steps you can take to make a trip to the vet a fun learning experience.

The first step in making this transition is to be able to spot the stress signs your dog is giving you.  Some stress is necessary in learning, but too much can be damaging.  Some common signs of stress in dogs is a lowered body and head, heavy panting and/or salivating, tail tucked under their body, pacing and the whites of the eyes showing, or "Whale Eye".  Note the stress signs when you first start this transition and watch as they slowly go away as time goes on.

The next step is to pair the front room and waiting room with something good, such as a game,  toy or treats.  Traning is another good way to occupy your time at the vets.  Teach your dog the basics sucn as sit, down, stay or touch.  I also suggest bringing a KONG toy filled with peanut butter to keep your dog focused on something other than the smells and sounds.

The last step in easing the stress of the vet's office is to practice vet exams regularly at your house and around town.  If your dog is used to being poked and prodded at, then the vet exam will be no big deal.  I suggest focusing on the head, ears, eyes, teeth (watch out!), shoulders and paws.  While practicing these exams, watch your dog for signs of stress and take it slow.  If at any time you see your dog freeze, growl, show their teeth, or show any other signs of aggression, stop immediately and seek professional assistance to properly deal with the situation.

By focusing your dog's attention on something productive, such as training or a toy, and doing practice exams, the vet's office becomes a fun and exciting place to be, and your vet will thank you too!
